As a kid, Lee grew up in the family business running around the shop. He ran a couple of machines, even worked at Esco part-time when he was in high school. However, wanting to pursue other avenues in life, Lee attended Suffolk University in Boston and graduated with a marketing degree in 2001. After college, Lee started working for a local brewery. It wasn’t until his dad called him and said he was contemplating retirement that Lee thought he would give the family business a shot.
He took a leave of absence from the brewery and moved back down to New Jersey. One of his first positions at Esco was writing the instructions for each job that went out on to the shop floor. In order to do this, he went around to every employee in the stage of the process and asked them what they did and how they did it. Gaining a deeper understanding for the optical process and how optics were made, Lee quickly decided that the optical industry was where he belonged!
Throughout Lee’s tenure at Esco he has had many jobs. From marketing to sales to shop manager to eventually president and part owner in 2011. Lee worked hard to learn the family business from the ground up. He says his greatest accomplishments come when his employees and customers succeed in their endeavors.
Lee has made a big splash in the optics industry! He has turned a small shop in New Jersey in to one of the top optical manufacturing facilities in the country. Being a member of OSA, SPIE and most recently elected to the APOMA board, Lee is always looking at ways to further Esco and the optical industry as a whole.
Lee is an avid NY Giants fan, hardly ever missing a game. When not watching the Giants, Lee enjoys fishing, boating, skiing and golf. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Amanda and their two pups Brody and Kink.
Fred started at Esco in 1979 as an employee in the stockroom. Knowing he wanted to take on more responsibility and learn more about the industry, when offered the position in sales one year later he jumped at the opportunity. Fred’s passion for his customers has kept him in his current role of Sales Manager for over 39 years!
Fred has said that he looks forward to coming to work every day. As a self-described “people person”, Fred enjoys the interaction with customers on a daily basis. He takes great delight in being able to see a customer’s optical vision come to light by helping them through each stage of the process. He is eager and looking forward to taking on the next customer’s optical challenge!
When not satisfying customers, Fred is often jamming out to Elvis music. A huge fan, he never misses the Elvis festival up by his home in Lake George, NY. Fred has been married 42 years to his wife Maxine. They have 2 children together, Scott and Heidi and two fur babies Diamond and Daisy. When up north at their home in Lake George they can often be seen walking or fishing around the lake.
Business Development Manager
Ron Schulmerich Business Development Manager Ron’s career in optics started in 1978 in Rochester, NY where he spent 23 years at Glass Fab Inc. There, his responsibilities spanned from entry-level fabrication to QA/Materials Management, eventually leading to his roles as Quality Manager and Technical Sales Engineer. During this time, Ron received two A.A.S. degrees in Optical Engineering Technology and Quality Engineering from Monroe Community College. Later, he appeared at the college as a guest adjunct instructor and through his continued interest in optics he created an optical materials handbook.
In 2004, he left Glass Fab and joined Angstrom Precision Optics as a principle and VP of Sales. During his tenure at APO he assisted in refining optical polishing and machining techniques. In 2009, he took the role of President at APO. During this period, he also consulted for Optimax Systems and Advanced Glass Industries in the capacity of optical material engineering and testing.
Ron joined the Esco Optics team in December of 2013. With 38 years of experience in optics, he brings a wealth of industry familiarity and expertise with him. “It is personally and professionally rewarding to partner with a respected and tenured organization like Esco Optics. I’m pleased to find an organization that truly shares in the passion and excitement I do for the Optics/Photonics Industry.”
In his spare time, Ron periodically authors a class on optical polishing and fabrication techniques for the American Scientific Glassblowers Society.
Additionally, he and his wife Diane founded the annual Western NY Optics golf tournament in 2000 and have been active in its continued growth each year since.
Ron and Diane hail from Pittsford, NY. They have two adult children, Jason and Amanda, and not to forget their faithful four-legged canine companion, Lola and new addition Chester. Ron’s personal interests are woodworking, golf and acoustic guitar.
Chief Operating Officer
Esco Optics is very proud to have John Escolas join the team. John is no stranger to operational growth and structure, and he has a proven track record with taking companies to the next level. In his short time here, he has already begun to manage the ongoing growth that coincides with our expanded facility and increased capabilities.
John spent the early part of his career as a hands-on engineer, focusing on process improvements. While moving into more challenging roles as he advanced in his career, he learned the importance of collaborative and cohesive manufacturing amongst team members. Communication, goal setting, and cross-training became necessary characteristics in order to maintain successful growth.
Prior to Esco, John has been an integral team member of other exceptional optics manufacturers. From Machine Operator, to Director of Operations and Engineering, to Sales Manager, John has experienced all facets of a precision optics manufacturing company. These various responsibilities and positions allowed John to understand what it means to truly service the needs of a customer, and produce superior optical components.
As Esco Optics’ Chief Operating Officer, John’s role goes well beyond process and employee improvement. He is ensuring that we exceed customer expectations from the project qualifying stage through product completion and the end-user’s successful execution. He continues to improve our daily operation efficiencies while keeping the shared vision of the company in mind, that our success is based on the success of our customers.
Outside of the office, John enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. His hobbies include all things motor driven, and you can frequently find him under the hood of a car or on his motorcycle. He’s been known to get out on the links when time allows, but with two children under five, free time is hard to come by!
We look forward to the shared successes to come…not just between John and Esco, but with John’s drive and dedication, we know our customer’s success will continue to grow and improve as well.
Bill is a University of Maine graduate and 20 year veteran of the optical industry. Throughout the years, he’s covered many facets of optical manufacturing including, glass blank machining, precision lens and window polishing, as well as, the application of metal and dielectric thin film coatings. Bill is experienced in optical properties and current metrology techniques. He has a complete understanding of optical component processing from estimating, through production to final inspection.
As a sales and business development engineer, he’s assisted companies worldwide and has logged nearly enough miles in support of his customers to have traveled from the earth to the moon and back again. Whether promoting single, off-the-shelf replacement parts, or optics for large-scale OEM instrument production, there are few industries he has not explored.
A country boy at heart, he resides in Southern Vermont, tucked in the hills near the Green Mountain National Forest and when not assisting customers with their optical requirements, he can be found outside, very late at night, staring up at the sky through his telescope.
