Many optical systems require quick iterations, prototype adjustments, or short production runs that do not fit the long lead times of fully custom manufacturing. That is where modified catalog optics provide a major advantage. By starting with in-stock optical components and applying custom changes such as edge dimensions, simple coatings, bevels, thickness adjustments, and laser marking, we can significantly reduce production timelines while still meeting application-specific performance requirements.
For engineers and OEMs, this approach bridges the gap between standard off-the-shelf optics and fully custom components. Modified catalog optics allow companies to accelerate development cycles, lower tooling costs, and reduce risk by leveraging existing manufacturing processes and materials. Whether supporting imaging systems, laser applications, or precision instrumentation, Esco offers customization capabilities to help customers move from concept to deployment faster without sacrificing quality or performance.
A key benefit of working with Esco is the wide range of substrate materials available for plano optics in square and circular shapes. Common materials such as N-BK7, Borofloat 33, Fused Quartz, and Fused Silica each offer unique optical and mechanical advantages depending on the application. If you have a new design in-mind, review our catalog optics for potential modifications.
One of the primary advantages of modified catalog optics is their ability to balance performance, lead time, and cost. Because the optical substrate already exists within a catalog offering, customers avoid many of the expenses associated with a ground-up custom design. However, modifications such as dimensional changes, precision edging, and custom coatings do add manufacturing time and cost. This is especially true for low-volume orders, where coating setup and processing costs can represent a larger percentage of the overall part price. Even so, modified catalog optics often remain a more economical solution than fully custom optics while delivering many of the same functional benefits.
In today’s fast-paced landscape, speed and flexibility are increasingly critical. We specialize in configurable catalog optics that provide customers with a practical solution for balancing performance, cost, and turnaround time.
